Everyone has been there at one point or another in their career, where you’re first starting out with your career, being completely drained of energy to do anything, or see any one. You know what I’m talking about, after the long hours all you want to do is go home and lay in bed, order in takeaway, or put a half-hearted attempt to cook something.
Essentially, we all get trapped in this mindset of living to work without any time to practice self-care or treating ourselves. Here are a few great tips on how you can take care of yourself.
1. EAT HEALTHY
I know what you’re thinking, healthy eating after work when all you can think of is a fast, quick, and easy take away? Or maybe you have kids and working full time, and don’t have the time to do the groceries, and prepare a meal.
Eating healthy is proven to make you feel less tired and gluggy, some simple tips on how you can do this is cutting out refined sugars, processed foods, and cooking your own food. And who says you have to do it all yourself? Take your partner and kids out for a shopping trip to pick up your groceries, get out and about especially on the weekends.
If you’re like me, willing to cook but have no idea where to start, I recently stumbled upon the
Flavour Generator by Hello Fresh. It whips up a quick and easy recipe depending on what cuisine and flavours you’re feeling.
2. WORK OUT
It’s a very cliché suggestion for self-care isn’t it? In the process of working out, your body natural release endorphins which are ‘feel good’ hormones. You’ll natural feel more relaxed and reach a calmed state.
If you have trouble sleeping doing light exercise, then showering and jumping into bed is one of the best feelings. If you’re like me, you’ll have the best sleeps post workout and shower.
Also, it’s important that after coming home from work where you’re probably sitting for most of the time, to stretch your body out and get your muscles moving! A great alternative is swimming, which is low impact and
However, just be sure not to be completely consumed by working out to achieve unachievable goals as this can have the opposite effect to self-care.
3. SLEEP BETTER
Sometimes it can be hard to unwind after work, and sometimes you unwind too much after work that you’re restless for the rest of the night. I have come across this situation all too often, where I come home and basically sit on my bed binging Netflix to unwind, then find myself restless for the night and wake up feeling terrible.
It might seem like a good option at the time to take a sleeping pill, but that can lead to feeling gluggy in the morning. So why not try some natural remedies for sleeplessness, like putting a drop of lavender oil on your pillow. Lavender is known to have a calming effect on your body, letting it know it’s time to settle in for the night.
If you feel yourself being overwhelmed and overworked it’s important that you talk to someone about it, whether it is a friend, partner, colleague, or a medical professional. Working a full time job can be stressful and mentally draining, so it is extremely important that we look after ourselves!
When you first start off in the workplace you can feel that everything is moving so fast and you are completely freaking out. Please remember to take time for yourself! Incorporate one or more of these little changes into your daily routine to improve your overall well-being.
