For people new to the law of attraction, how to do it right is often their biggest question. There’s a lot of information out there these days about the law of attraction, positive thinking and manifesting your desires. Still there are plenty of peeps ‘working’ these energies who still don’t feel like they’re ‘getting’ anywhere – or anything – that they’re wanting. Are you one of these people? If you are, then please read on …

There are 4 things you need to understand if you want to harness the law of attraction.

1. You’re Doing it All the Time

If you don’t know this already, let me point out that you ARE – all the time – living in and working with the Law of Attraction. Your thoughts, feelings and focus attract to you more of the same. The problem is, if you’re not consciously choosing and directing your thoughts, feelings and focus, then your attracting by ‘default’. So if you’re not liking what’s showing up in your life, then the first thing you need to do is …

2. ‘Break’ your Mind

I never liked the way the equestrian world refers to training horses as ‘breaking’ them. I understand ‘breaking in’ a new pair of shoes or jeans, but this ‘breaking the will’ of a wild animal has always felt wrong to me. But then again, I’m not an equestrian, and horses are magnificently powerful and potentially dangerous animals, so I’ll leave the horse-jargon to those who know better.

BUT … when it comes to the MIND, and specifically, the hyper-developed, ego-driven Monkey Mind, this idea of ‘breaking’ is ideal. Why? Because the monkey mind that goes on unconscious tangents of worry, doubt, criticism and fear is wildly out of control. AND, it’s the major block that’s keeping you from consciously working the Law.

Bringing awareness to your subconscious habits of thought – and then immediately changing the subject when what you’re thinking isn’t what you want – is the mental/spiritual equivalent of ‘breaking’ a horse. It is the act of putting the wild, uncontrolled mind into the service of the greater self. How do you build your ability to do it? Think: ‘MIM’: Meditation, Intention, Mindfulness. You can also simply stop what you’re doing every 30 minutes or so and bring all your attention to what you’re thinking about. Observe, become aware, become mindful of your tendencies of thought. Do you tend to worry a lot? Do you rehash old dramas? Do you let your mind flit about in nonsense? These insights will tell you a lot about yourself and how to redirect your thinking.

3. Follow your Gut

Once you start to get the hang of this conscious awareness thing, you’ll be much more able to distinguish between mental chatter and intuitive guidance. Those ‘gut’ instincts are what you want to listen to, but as long as your monkey mind is in control and makin’ a ruckus, its hard to hear and feel what your wiser self is trying to tell you. So silence the din! Once you do, then you’ll be able to effectively …

4. Take Action

Taking action on inner guidance you can trust is the key to change. It may feel scary or even silly sometimes, but when you feel that true “Yes!” about something, hesitating is the last thing you want to do! Maybe your gut tells you to go out to do errands when you planned to stay inside. You go out, run into an old friend who happens to know someone who has just the thing (knowledge, a job, the perfect date) that you’ve been wanting to attract.

You can’t know exactly HOW you’re going to get what you’re wanting. Many times, the results of consciously working the law of attraction arrive in ways we couldn’t possibly have imagined. (And I’m speaking from personal experience here). This is why the action you take based on your gut instincts rather than on rationalized, over-analysed ‘choices’, is so important. And I know this sounds scary, but really and truly – it’s what works!

Your Turn!

Does this speak to you? Are you stuck on one of these steps? Is there something else you’d like to add? Leave us a comment and let us know?

dean, be gentle with yourself and simply notice that your inner knowing is here. It takes practice to follow and trust that inner knowing. Could be a fun game to watch the process of when you follow it and when you notice that you did not and it was telling you something.

No, when I meditate for long periods the monkey mind goes away and stays away.

  • Avatar Megan Hudson says:

Breaking the mind can also be braking the mind. The right brain hemisphere functions as a brake pedal and the left brain is the gas pedal. All the functions described are indicative of an overdriving gas pedal or left brain and the effective intervention is the application of the braking system or right brain. Meditation is a process that activates the right brain to quell the monkey minded left brain. We become proficient at what we practice over time due to neuroplasticity. "Perfect practice makes permanent."

  • Totally true about the breaking horses part, you are on the right track. Being a natural horsemanship trainer, when people mention "breaking" the animal…it's wrong. You dont need force, bits, tie downs, whips, spurs or whatever to Force a horse to obey you through fear and pain! It can be done without all this stuff..you simply think like a horse, connect with it on an energetic level and once the connection is made, voila!! He or she will do anything you want with pleasure! They are very spiritual animals, more evolved than we are and they have been here since the beginning of time to help man attain their level. We are slowly getting there!

Just reread Eckhart Tolle's 'The New Earth'. His metaphor of the 'pain body' is your 'monkey mind'. He taps the Taoist understanding of non doing, as the powerful shift possible when I show up as a passive observer of the stuff of life, both my own and others. Present awareness that observes the painful monkey stuff, without interference, just allowing whatever is to unfold, brings the light of consciousness to bear. We attract our life with the magnetic energy we emanate, mixing the lightness of what we are awake to, with the shadows of what our monkey mind struggles with that we do not yet witness wakefully.

Thank you for reminding us again. It's so easy to slip in a comfort zone and then when you read something like this, you think, 'Mmmmm….'

I have gradually learned learnt to stop myself on going on that crazy tangent of negative thoughts or thoughts that do not lead to anything & also sometimes asking myself as to why did i feel that particular emotion…..it is def a process which we have learn…..but my question is HOW to learn to trust your inner intuition or GUT like you have just …that it is not just your monkey mind tricking you to think that was your intuition speaking…How do we figure that out????

The more you practice stillness, the more it transcends into your day to day life,as you are already on your way with this and can see when you are going into a negative re-action or to put it another way ,into your default conditioned mind state, centre yourself either through the breath or whatever way you have been doing so far, this mind state is where your intuition comes through loud and clear, slowly but surely you will get to know what is ego monkey mind and what is your higher self, its trial and error, but it's all about personnel growth,we only learn by our mistakes, when it feel s right you resonate at a higher frequency, you feel awesome and you know its right.Trust it and flow..Keep going

I found this essay to be very nice. I ought mention that there is and has always been a "natural horesmanship" subgroup within the horse world. These guys that we caught a glimpse of in the movie "Horse Whisperer's" do just the opposite of breaking horses. They allow the horse to spend time around them in an open setting and simply wait till the horse comes over and the "bonding" and "agreements" happen. So, the method of breaking horses, still dominant in the culture is just a reflection of hubris and utter disconnection from the natural world.

So, no point in using the breaking model with the human mind, eh ? After sitting with people for 25 years as a clinical and police psychologist I believe you are talking about helping people unlearn. It's about de-construction, initiating steps to unlearn brain chatter and bad cognitive habits, etc.

That takes some time and patience.

So much crap is being slammed at my mind from everywhere . mostly from what I see and hear ..I live in a big city so I have to be exposed to a certain degree …I wonder how much of my manifesting is being the result of what advertising is telling me this is what I want this is what I need . So many people have no clue that they are being used to manifest what kind of world someone that can pay for the ads on tv radio internet billboards signs cars buses what is on your body in your house what your food comes in.
All I know is I try to control what it is that I am trying to do and be ..and it takes all my time ..Life is a thing to enjoy and feel …good or bad I guess ..

  • Just a thought on the 'breaking' of horses. We DO NOT break their will or spirit. We 'break' them in, so to speak, to saddle, bridle and rider. "Breaking" is just a term that relates to the stage of their training. Horses with a broken spirit, or will, has no desire to compete or please, which is the exact opposite of what an equine athlete needs to be successful.

Hey Sharon – thanks so much for clarifying this. I've learned something and now appreciate the term and the purpose!!

Breaking sounds a bit like using willpower against your yourself, your desires, and what is going on in side you. Why fight it? It is just your resources operating without training. I prefer the idea of the horse whisperer and getting the mind under control gently. Michael Norman has very useful information about this.

Quieting the mind is really not necessary in order to follow your Heart or intuition….the mind is a wonderful tool and designed perfectly. One only has to train it to listen to you, And know that it only ever asks questions about the chatter you here….direct it through choice. Until you know the difference and the two sources are merged, don't believe your thought's unless they lead you to peace and more love….

  • Avatar Bobbi says:

I think that breaking the mind is a very good way of controlling negative thoughts. After listening to Abraham Hick's Pivoting process I am getting much better at this control. When I start thinking negatively now I stop and then tell myself that I don't want these thoughts I want to feel good and the negative chain of thought is immediately broken and I return to my better feeling self.

I have been working on this specifically recently. My previous 20 years have been fraught with ups and downs. I have had friends tell me I should be in the food biz for years. I am not sure when (and in the past would have said how….so let's "cancel" on the how part) the money will manifest this idea I have to sell salsa and give back to the community in a big way, meaning the bigger we grow the more we give back, but I feel I am on the right path! It has been amazing the positive responses I have gotten since I started the ball rolling toward my REAL passion. Cannot wait to see the results from the changes I am making and have made regarding my thinking. Look forward to my continuing my passage toward enlightenment and prosperity!

I have discovered that it;s not only the thoughts which keep me from being more in tune and conscious.
It's diet, routines, habits, religeon, etc. as well.
I have many habitual tendencies and an addictive nature. I also fall into dependency alot of the time.
For instance…coffee. mama mia…I love it!
Once I "broke" that habit, what a difference in my thoughts! My diet followed. A former meat and potatoes, white bread, carb person…to a vegan vegetarian! HOLY COW! If you could only feel the energy that surged through me from that shift!
What I'm trying to say is that everything is connected and I believe the key to "breaking" the cycles is desire. When you reach a point and say…"I'm sick and tired of being sick and tired"…anything and everything can change…but…it doesn't have to reach that point with stress. One can choose right NOW to say "that's it…that's enough!!!"….and then do the necessary work.
I'm not saying it will fix everything and it certainly is not easy…but it is well worth it.
    YOU ARE WORTH IT!
