Remember our declaration last week to spread positive news each Monday (because the media so often only shares the bad stuff)?
Well, as promised, here’s another feel-good story from the Global Awesomeness Report that not only won our Positive Story of the Week prize, but our hearts too.
For the past 25 years, Anthony Cymerys, otherwise known as “Joe the Barber,” has been giving free haircuts to the homeless in exchange for hugs in a city park in Hartford, Connecticut. And while the 82-year-old goes to work at his makeshift barber’s stand (come rain or shine), his friends hand out food to the needy.
Anthony’s story has received so much well-deserved notice, that his deeds also recently attracted the attention of local police and health officials, who sought to impose an eviction notice because of “safety and sanitation” concerns, and his lack of work permit.
Fortunately, this story has a happy ending.
In recognition of the years of charitable work Anthony has so selflessly given to the community, the Hartford Mayor has given Mr. Cymerys a special dispensation to continue working and helping the homeless in the park.
His kindness and continued dedication to help those less fortunate than he, serve as beautiful reminders of how selfless and caring humans can be, and also of the difference one person can make to the lives of others.
If this story touched you too, we encourage you to continue to spread the positivity by sharing it with your friends. Do you have an inspiring tale that’s worthy of being dubbed “Positive Story of the Week”? Please post it below.
