Most people would say that they’re chasing happiness. When your life is full of stress, work, and worry, it’s hard to feel at peace with yourself. How can you make yourself happier? The answer is in changing your daily habits.

These 10 things have all been scientifically proven to help you feel happier with your life, and so help you achieve more every day. Here’s how you can change your habits and be happy.

1. Exercise

This tip sounds rather obvious, but studies have shown that exercise helps your body release more endorphins, making you feel happier. After a session in the gym, you’ll feel tired but you’ll feel a sense of accomplishment.

You can boost this further by taking part in group activities such as a yoga or spin class, or taking up a group sport. Exercising with others is a good way to make friends, and help you feel happier every day.

2. Writing

You may not have kept a journal since you were a teenager, but if you want to feel happier, writing about your feelings is a good way to start.

“Writing every day gives you a release for your feelings, instead of bottling them up”, says writer Janet Davies from Best British Essays. “You’ll find that the more you get into the habit of writing, the happier you will feel.”

Writing in a journal gives you a safe space to express your feelings.

3. Focus On Relationships

Many people measure their success by how much they earn, but the problem with that is it will always leave you dissatisfied. After all, it’s easy to feel as though you’ll never earn enough, and so you’ll never feel truly happy. Many experts say instead, you should focus on your relationships. Your connections with friends and family don’t depend on money, and will be a lot more fulfilling.

4. Get More Sleep

It’s easier said than done, but you should get more sleep if you want to be happier. Stop burning the candle at both ends, and set a regular bedtime for yourself. Ban the screens at bedtime too, and you can start getting much better quality sleep.

5. Help Others

It’s amazing how much helping others can help you feel happier in yourself. When you help out someone in need, you can feel good about yourself as you’ve made someone else’s life easier. This can mean anything, from volunteering at a homeless shelter to picking up a coffee for someone else. “We have a lot of review writers who get a lot out of writing reviews” says writer Peter Bannon at Revieweal. “They know their reviews help readers make the right choices, which feels great.”

6. Plan A Vacation

You don’t have to go on the vacation to get the benefit from it. When you plan your vacation, you’ll feel happier as you’re mapping out your trip, and deciding where you’ll go. When you come home, you’ll often feel a little sad as you come back to your old life. That means you’ll just have to start planning the next one!

7. Be Grateful

Happiness can elude you because you’re focusing so much on what you don’t have. Instead of doing this, try being grateful for what you do have. This could mean keeping a gratitude journal, where you write down everything you’re grateful for that day. It could also mean writing thank you letters to people.

However you do it, just spend some time being grateful for what you have.

8. Get Outdoors

Many people feel down or low during the winter months, as they see less sunlight and the temperatures drop. When the weather improves, take advantage of it and get outside. Sunlight and warm weather helps people feel more upbeat and positive.

9. Get A Pet

No matter what kind of animal you own, studies show that owning them can make you happier. People with pets suffer depression less, and they have lowered blood pressure. Having a relationship with a pet can be hugely rewarding, as they’ll show you unconditional love. If you’ve been looking for an excuse to get a puppy, now you have the perfect one. It’s good for your health!

10. Live In The Now

Finally, the best way to stay happy is to not worry about what the future holds. It’s easy to worry about what’s going to happen in the future and how you’re going to meet any challenges, but these worries often don’t help. Focus on what’s happening right now, and enjoy your life as it is in this moment.

These 10 tips have all been proven to help you be happier. Try them out, and you’ll see that you’ll feel much more relaxed and fulfilled in your life, which will make you happy.
