One of the most calming and powerful actions you can do to intervene in a stormy world is to stand up and show your soul. Soul on deck shines like gold in dark times. The light of the soul throws sparks, can send up flares, builds signal fires, causes proper matters to catch fire. To display the lantern of soul in shadowy times like these – to be fierce and to show mercy toward others; both are acts of immense bravery and greatest necessity. Struggling souls catch light from other souls who are fully lit and willing to show it. If you would help to calm the tumult, this is one of the strongest things you can do.
Clarissa Pinkola-Estes

Immense power and creativity are unleashed when women not only prove that they can do it on mans’ terms, but that they instead actively participate in defining the terms in a way that feels true and balanced.

Leadership implies qualities of influence, qualities that affect how you relate to people around you, how you relate to your own creativity and vision, and how you relate, moment to moment, to your own emotions and thoughts.

Are you ready to take the next step in embracing your role as a leader? Here are three core principles to keep in mind:

1. ‘You’ Time

The number one principle of feminine leadership is to create space and time for yourself. Remember the instructions from the flight attendant on an airplane before taking off — “In case of emergency put the oxygen mask on yourself first before you put it on your child.”

It is logical isn’t?

If you don’t have oxygen, you will die, and you cannot take care of anybody else. Nevertheless, most of us women are deeply stuck in a collective habit of running around taking care of everybody else. As a result, we stumble to bed wondering what happened to our visions and dreams, and the thrill of just being alive.

Your friends tell you that you are probably burned out, your husband calls you bitter and frigid, your kids wonder why you never smile. And you? You simply want to go to bed and never get up again.

Unless your inner well is filled up, you cannot fully take care of anyone, or anything. Likewise, when your well is filled to the brim, you can indeed make miracles happen in the world.

We need to work through the old mental programming telling us that it is selfish to prioritize our own well-being and make it our number one priority to take care of ourselves.

In fact, this is the most profound way you can serve the world. Rejuvenated, glowing and brimming with inspiration and strength we can give our gifts to the world, and keep giving, in a sustainable way.

2. Connect with Higher Purpose

Why are you alive? What is truly important to you? What motivates you in the deepest sense?

The answers to these questions will guide you through the ups and downs of the creative process. When you connect with a purpose of service to something or someone outside yourself, you are no longer be a slave to your emotional roller-coaster; one day feeling utterly worthless and not wanting to get out of bed, another the ego getting so inflated that you are flying three feet off the ground. All this get less important when you are connected with a higher purpose, your “why.”

Your purpose will fill you with a burning urgency, making it impossible to keep postponing giving your gifts, waiting for that one magic day when you will no longer feel fear. Your passion to serve is so strong that you can’t help but show up, ready or not.

Don’t worry about what form it will take. The “how to” will be guided by the “why.”

The truth is that your purpose is not a static destination in time; it is a process that always takes place right here, right now. It is a process similar to falling in love: you fall in love with what is truly important, and you marry it. As in any marriage, you allow for evolution and growth; but you are committed for better or for worst. Take the step, today. Marry your deepest values, and begin to live as a true leader.

3. Fuel Your Compassion

The Dalai Lama says that the future of the world lies in the hands of women because women are the teachers of compassion. It is true that compassion comes naturally to the feminine, but we have learned to view this quality as ’soft’ and therefore not suitable when it comes to leadership in business or global interactions.

Moreover, the reality is that this quality is one of the most essential keys to new leadership for a new time.  Women’s natural concern for everybody’s needs is profoundly valuable and effective in leading and empowering a team. It is evident that people who feel empowered, seen and cared for will do a better job. Just imagine the possibilities as we bring this skill-set into international diplomacy.

One aspect of this leadership skill is to have enough spaciousness in yourself so that you can be truly present with another. This means that you can receive another without jumping into evaluation and reaction right away. We practice to “sit back in the saddle,” and to really listen with an open heart.

Don’t wait for the right job before you rise and shine; you can live as a Woman Leader right here, right now. Remember, the world is a more prosperous place because of you.

This article reads as if it were written by me for me. Thankyou for such perception and honesty, it restores me to know that I not alone and am in the company of women who treasure womanhood as do I. I grew up in a household where womens viewpoints were as valid as mens, and all family members were respected. I have not had great relationships as I have found that out in the world that is a rare occurrence indeed. True to my calling however I forge ahead and teach my sons and daughter the value of respect for all people, as I was. Jodie Zammit, Australia.

  • This article is wonderful and I love the sound of the Awakening women institute! I too work with restoring the Feminine Divine to her rightful place and resonate deeply with everything the author has to say here! Blessings to this author for fulfilling her Divine Purpose!

I really appreciate the clarity and generosity of this article. I must be in the conception phase Chameli described. Until reading the article I thought of my situation as a frazzled desperate search to know my purpose and being somewhat apprehensive about my ability to then live it. The analogy helps me to move from that lost/'make it happen' kind of mindset to understanding that an important process has begun for me. I can see that approaching it with more patience and calm will feel more like a dance as mentioned and less like a grappling match, what a relief! Thank you.

Congratulations on your article, it's great to see women gaining a greater level of awareness of the power they posses and the possibilities that are out there. I hope we can get more women into positions of power and bring about a higher level of compassion and less competition to world negotiations in the business and political sphere. The pendulum is slowly moving in this direction so i implore all women out there to start laying plans for your life purpose as the future has never been brighter to make your mark. Do your best.

Thank you Chameli for your insights into the power of the feminine. Your article struck that caring, creative, and powerful chord in me. I like the analogy of pregnancy and childbirth. However, the phase of having an infant may not be all "Sleepless nights, exhaustion, and the thrill of the new…" If I may, I suggest that you include nourishing the infant with food (mother's milk) that comes from the maternal breast, her center of love and affection, would make this phase truly feminine.

  • […] May 4, 2009 by awakeningwomen You may find my article on Feminine Leadership on FinerMinds.com interesting. (Please ignore the title, they called it “use your feminine instincts to rule the world”, in my view the feminine is not interested to rule anything, we have more important things to do) Got to article […]

  • Thank you so much for pointing that out, I agree.

Thank you Chameli for your clarity and wisdom. As a 1970's 'Superwoman' I learned the hard way that "doing it as well as a man" only leds a caring woman to despair. When I began to blend masculine 'strength' with feminine 'softness', I began to live again – in joy.

Beautiful article. I would say I'm at the pregnancy stage, anxious to birth, but still unsure of where it's all going. I am doing my best to gather strength and prepare for the days ahead. I trust that all will unfold as it should.

There is this growing excitement though, wondering, wondering, wondering, what will happen next. :)

Thank you Chameli, for sharing in your Goddess, Soul-nurtured self and shining in the brilliance that only YOU can share! All the moments of now are calling to each one of us and patiently supporting us to go forth in our beautifully feminine selves!

I love the phases – as a Mum, they are very relatable, and there is such a wondrous power in showing up and embracing whatever phase we are currently experiencing.

I was just speaking with a dear friend the other day in how now the time has come for us as women to be powerful and influential and soft and compassionate and loving and giving….without resorting to some behaviours in the past that truly have not served us in our higher good.

I wish you all Many Blessings, Abundant Health and Amazing Unlimited Success, Leah

Oh Chameli this is such a lovely article. Thank you so much for sharing your wisdom with everyone.

This was one of my favorite lines:

"You cannot force the seed to sprout before it is ready, but even in the winter time, deep underneath the earth, important growth is taking place."

I am a complete believer in this now. I have grown through many times of darkness & it has all taught me to "let go" & trust in my life's journey. All I need to do is stay present Now to experience the process! : )

Thank you for the wonderful reminders!

    Love to you,

I am definitely in the conception stage. I've been feeling frustrated knowing there's something I'm to do but what it is, is out of my view. It's truly been draining me and I've been feeling overwhelmed trying to decide how to prioritiz and chasing different interests, even if only in mind at times.

Now I know what to focus on and to relax much more.

Thank you so much for this article.

Also, I like the pregnancy analogy even though I never had kids.

Indeed, The forces of the universe (One song/ verse) include "feminine" energies. The world needs all souls to rise up and become the examples of compassion, nurture, acceptance, and patient gestation. The holding of an image, thought. feeling, or goal is a human experience that creates community (Come to unity). Our world will spin on a dime when men and women ignite the spiritual fire of the Soul to be responsive and discerning instead of judgmental. Women inherit the power of unconditional Love and our society has "not valued" the examples of timeless, immateriality (heaven on Earth). We humans need the "light of love" to lead the way to our whole selves. Thank You for the example of the empowerment available to anyone who believes in the divine feminine. Respect for each other will become Peace on Earth.

Great article. One caution though, after doing the 'The Goddess Rinse', would suggest that the 'final and ending movement' be from the feet upwards, with cupped hands, up to chin level. This would restore vital energy. The downward movement IS removing excess and perhaps stagnent energy.

  • Chameli,

A pain crosses my heart when I feel how much I want to express my wisest, most wonderous and powerful feminine – in every moment of my life. No meeting is too stuffy, no person too intimidating, no excuse sufficient. Too many years I’ve kept her back, stuffed her down, and waited till it felt safe. Well, at least for me, the time is now for my fullest expression of feminine wisdom. And it sounds like that is true for you as well as for so many of your readers!

Perhaps a celebration is in order?
