You might think movies are just a way to entertain and zone out, but you’d be surprised by how influential they can be when it comes to changing your life, or at the very least, your mindset.

Some of the biggest blockbusters have the deepest meaning and speak to us on a subconscious level. Whether this is a conscious decision by directors to help raise the collective planetary vibration, we’re not sure. But here are some of our top movies that have got us thinking and re-evaluating our lives.

The Matrix

This movie was a revolution! I’m not sure if the Wachowski siblings know just how close to the truth The Matrix actually is. Right about now some of you might be thinking, “How is this movie a representation of reality or spirituality, or life changing in any way?” Let us explain.

In the movie the main character has the choice to take a red pill or a blue pill. By taking the blue pill, he will go back to his ordinary life. By taking the red one, he will go down the rabbit hole and follow a path that will not be easy – but at least he will be living the truth.

This is the case for spiritual journeys too. When you “wake up” to reality, it doesn’t necessarily always mean that it will be easy and everything will be okay. But you do realize that the world you’re living in is just a representation of what you perceive to be “real”. Sound familiar?

Shawshank Redemption

A story of a banker who spends nearly 20 years in Shawshank State Prison for the murder of his wife and her lover (despite protesting his innocence). As he joins the other inmates, it isn’t long until he too experiences and witnesses some of the brutality and injustice that goes well beyond their prison sentences. Watching this film is gut wrenching, as it’s a harsh reminder of how cruel humans can be to each other.

However sometimes even through the most unimaginable circumstances, there is one emotion that can give us the power to fight for our lives – hope. Out of the pits of despair of Shawshank Prison, the beauty of hope and love between friends prevails over the type of injustice that you’d think would break them. A tearful and beautiful reminder of how important hope is, and how strong the human spirit is.

Dead Poet’s Society

Set in a conservative school in 1959, this classic movie tells the story of an English teacher who inspires his students through his teaching of poetry. However the most famous teaching that came out of this movie would have to be: Carpe Diem: Seize The Day.

After this movie came out, how many of you remember quoting this endlessly when faced with moments of doubt when deciding to take action or not? And even after 23 years, it’s probably still a strong contender for being one of the most powerful messages in your bag of inspirational mottos.

How responsible it’s been for prompting people across the globe to take action when it comes huge decisions that ultimately changed their lives – we don’t know – but we think that chances are, the number’s pretty high.

What Dreams May Come

Another Robin Williams classic. This may have been a flop at the box office, but oh what a movie. It fills your heart with the strongest of emotions: sadness, love, despair and hope – while taking you on the journey between the afterlife, Earth and eternal paradise (heaven, if you will).

Don’t let the depressing storyline put you off (an incredibly loved-up couple’s twins die in a car accident, leaving the wife to have a breakdown before the husband also dies) ….bear where as (!).. because despite the sad plot, it really gets you thinking about the afterlife and the power of human love.

The ending of this film is so exquisite, that no matter how many times you’ve seen it, it’ll still tug at your heartstrings while reconfirming any beliefs you have in soulmates.

Sliding Doors

Ever wondered what would have happened if you walked across that road one minute earlier? And while crossing it, would have fate lead you to the other side just as safely? Or imagine the different route your life would have taken if you took one job over another? Consider the people you may have met and the opportunities you might have experienced.

To wonder “what would have happened if only I had done this instead of that” is something we’ve all probably spent some time contemplating, particularly when it comes to big life decisions. This is exactly why Sliding Doors was such a fascinating movie, because it allowed us to follow the journey of one girl’s story where her life went down two completely different paths as a result of one small moment.

Star Trek

Ah, Star Trek. Whether you’re a “Trekky” or not, it’s a great movie that has become a classic as it got us all thinking about how the universe splits, the concept of time and multiple dimensions.

Based on the ever-so famous adventures of the crew from the USS Enterprise, which sets out to explore new worlds, seek new life and civilizations, and boldly go where no man has gone before.

For many, it may have been the start of your journey with the Universe; where you realized its infinite possibilities stretch beyond what you were taught in science class.

These are just some of our favorite life changing movies – which ones are yours?
