3 Tips to Always Get Up on the Right Side of the Bed

Ever since I was a little kid, I have always been fascinated with the idea that you can actually have a great day… just by getting up on the right side of the bed!

Of course, the converse is also true— you can have a bad day by getting up on the wrong side of the bed.

In some small way the concept of getting up on the wrong side of the bed kind of concerned me when I was a little kid. You see, I had this big double bed and it was pushed all the way up against the wall. And there truly was only one side of the bed to get out of. All I could do was just hope that it was the right side of the bed. But the truth is…

It’s not how we get out of bed… it’s how we go to bed that counts.

In college, I majored in psychology, so I got to learn all about the power of the subconscious — which plays a big role in what happens while we sleep. What I learned was that we don’t actually get up in the wrong side of the bed… instead we go to bed on the wrong side.

It all starts with the night before. We can only wake up to a day filled with negativity if we go to sleep filled with negativity, worried or angry about our conflicts and problems. So I discovered that if I wanted to wake up on the right side of the bed every morning, all I needed to do was make sure I ended each day on some kind of positive note.

Here are three ways to ensure peace of mind every night before you fall asleep:

1. Read at least a few pages of something positive. I love reading right before bed. Books and ideas are kindling for the subconscious. Your mind can do amazing things while you’re sleeping if you make sure to feed it right before bed. Just be sure it is something positive, something empowering.

2. Review the day and plan for tomorrow. I always find I’m better equipped to tackle my to-do list if I mentally prepare myself the night before. Ask yourself things like, “What did I accomplish today? What did I not accomplish that needs to be addressed tomorrow? What more can I do tomorrow?”

3. Demonstrate gratitude. List just a few of the things you are grateful for in your life, no matter what kind of day you had, no matter how tough your struggles were, no matter how many “no”s you got. Every single time I do this, without exception, I am left with a positive attitude that allows me to go to sleep at peace.

The number one key, of course, is wanting to get up on the right side of the bed in the first place. You need to have an intense desire to be your best self every day. Are you ready?
