We thought we’d be brilliant and coin an original new word: wexter. This would be, we cheekily conjectured, a person who walks and texts at the same time. Fortunately, we Google-checked online before publishing this piece – and much to our suprise (and dismay) discovered that the word had already been invented. According to the Urban Dictionary, a wexter is:
A person walking around in public that has their cell phone/mobile device out in front of their face rapidly hitting keys (texting) while walking and not paying ANY attention to where he/she is walking…
So much for our originality, right?
People who do this wexting business can be somewhat annoying – but they can also be hazardous to themselves and others. There are many reasons for this – enough reasons, in fact – that the New York Times recently ran an article about them.
The piece, Texting While Walking – and its accompanying video – were written by award-winning filmmaker Casey Neistat. Please do not watch the video while walking!
What do you think – if you’re ‘wexting’ aren’t you missing out on observing and enjoying life’s simple joys that surround you?
