Rumors of her being 90 years old just aren’t true, but that doesn’t make her sound bytes of wisdom any less potent.

You’ve probably seen some of Regina Brett’s “Life Lessons” before, like “When it comes to chocolate, resistance is futile,” or “Whatever doesn’t kill you really does make you stronger”. They’re from her book God Never Blinks: 50 Lessons for Life’s Little Detours. Advice like this never grows old – or unwelcomed – so enjoy these mighty morsels of insight and happy Friday!

Serious Chocolate Steps

1. Life isn’t fair, but it’s still good.
2. When in doubt, just take the next small step.
3. Life is too short to waste time hating anyone.
4. Don’t take yourself so seriously. No one else does.
5. Pay off your credit cards every month.
6. You don’t have to win every argument. Agree to disagree.
7. Cry with someone. It’s more healing than crying alone.
8. It’s OK to get angry with God. He can take it.
9. Save for retirement starting with your first paycheck.
10. When it comes to chocolate, resistance is futile.

Peace without Comparison and God Never Blinks

11. Make peace with your past so it won’t screw up the present.
12. It’s OK to let your children see you cry.
13. Don’t compare your life to others’. You have no idea what their journey is all about.
14. If a relationship has to be a secret, you shouldn’t be in it.
15. Everything can change in the blink of an eye. But don’t worry; God never blinks.
16. Life is too short for long pity parties. Get busy living, or get busy dying.
17. You can get through anything if you stay put in today.
18. A writer writes. If you want to be a writer, write.
19. It’s never too late to have a happy childhood. But the second one is up to you and no one else.
20. When it comes to going after what you love in life, don’t take no for an answer.

Candles, Purple and Sex on the Brain

21. Burn the candles, use the nice sheets, wear the fancy lingerie. Don’t save it for a special occasion. Today is special.
22. Over-prepare, then go with the flow.
23. Be eccentric now. Don’t wait for old age to wear purple.
24. The most important sex organ is the brain.
25. No one is in charge of your happiness except you.
26. Frame every so-called disaster with these words: “In five years, will this matter?”
27. Always choose life.
28. Forgive everyone everything.
29. What other people think of you is none of your business.
30. Time heals almost everything. Give time time.

Change, Miracles and Second Childhoods

31. However good or bad a situation is, it will change.
32. Your job won’t take care of you when you are sick. Your friends will. Stay in touch.
33. Believe in miracles.
34. God loves you because of who God is, not because of anything you did or didn’t do.
35. Whatever doesn’t kill you really does make you stronger.
36. Growing old beats the alternative – dying young.
37. Your children get only one childhood. Make it memorable.
38. Read the Psalms. They cover every human emotion.
39. Get outside every day. Miracles are waiting everywhere.
40. If we all threw our problems in a pile and saw everyone else’s, we’d grab ours back.

Is it Useful, Beautiful or Joyful?

41. Don’t audit life. Show up and make the most of it now.
42. Get rid of anything that isn’t useful, beautiful or joyful.
43. All that truly matters in the end is that you loved.
44. Envy is a waste of time. You already have all you need.
45. The best is yet to come.
46. No matter how you feel, get up, dress up and show up.
47. Take a deep breath. It calms the mind.
48. If you don’t ask, you don’t get.
49. Yield.
50. Life isn’t tied with a bow, but it’s still a gift.

  • Avatar Theresa says:

Everyone one of these are so true and touch a chord in me,how could you possibly pick just one but I do definitely love number 10-the chocolate one:)

  • Avatar Liz says:

    # 40 on the list is my favorite. It reminds me of a sign my mom always hung on the kitchen wall. It was a picture of laundry drying on a clothes line and It said 'If all our troubles were hung on a line, you would take yours and I would take mine.'

  • Avatar Svetlana says:

I love almost all of them !!!!!
But my soul-favourites for TODAY :

*** If a relationship has to be a secret, you shouldn’t be in it.
*** No matter how you feel, get up, dress up and show up.
*** The best is yet to come.

    Thank you !!!!!

    And more…
But this one i'm not sure:
    46. No matter how you feel, get up, dress up and show up.
I understand but sometimes it's ok to stay home and take care of you…
and i'm okay with disagreing right now!

What she wants you to think about is… How many wonderful things have you missed because you”didn't feel like” doing something. This could be anything, anytime and anywhere. They are all good and probably strike a different chord depending where one stands in that particular moment. Right now these spoke the loudest:

Number 13, 23 and 29 are my particular favourites, they resonate with me however, there is something so true in almost all of the profound one liners. We spend most of our lives trying to please other or conforming to their expectation of us that we loose ourselves in the process, ending up with not just our complexes but often times making others complexes our own! These 50 lessons will defenitely go on my pin board and serve as a reminder about the important things in life.

As long as we are grateful of what we have, we can lead a happy life!
(E.g. if we complaint about the quality of food, just think bout those who starved.
If we dislike the small house we sttay in, just think about those who are homeless, …. etc.)

If this is applied for a relationship which for any one moment is not useful. beautiful or joyful will it be wise to get rid of the relationship?
For a moment the relationship of a man and a women as husband and wife gets into trouble for some way of life or behaviour of one of them it should be treated as is said 28. Forgive everyone everything. Because this is not in western world so many divorces; Do they expect something better in the next relationship? What will happen to the children? As such I feel this statement needs alteration.

everyone deserves happiness and if your relationship no longer provides that happiness then you should end it but definitely seek to find some happiness first with your relationship…sometimes people no longer feel the need to love and nurture each other and they should be allowed to leave…what will happen to the children? It is another lesson in life that they will learn – allow them constant contact with each parent but let them understand that they don't have to accept a life of misery or sadness or unhappiness – the reason for leaving your relationship is because it is no longer beautiful or joyful…

We are to be thankful our problems are so petty compared to other’s out there. The extent of a problem depends on the eyes of the beholder.
